Acquiring the Car – The Backstory

Oh man. This was a fun one. So, after my adventure finding the 1971 step-side pickup, I kept searching and searching for a low-cost project that was actually a 1969. After scouring several online sources, I came across an interesting find in Mount Airy, Georgia, on May 28, 2023. A gentleman who needed to sell his pickup had posted an interesting project on eBay, and again on a Sunday night, I submitted a cost-effective bid of $6,990. And headed off to bed. And, to my surprise, I woke up Monday morning as the winning bid.

I decided to drive to Georgia to pick up the truck, and after grabbing a U-Haul auto transport trailer in Atlanta, I drove the extra 45 minutes to his location in Mount Airy. The seller’s location was truly up in the hills in a secluded trailer park, and I was a bit suspicious about driving off into the woods with cash in hand. But after meeting the seller, he seemed like a nice enough gentleman. After helping me load the truck onto the trailer, he began to give me a bit of the details behind his need to sell it.

Turns out he and four other neighbors were on a shared septic system, and apparently, he had been flushing one too many “questionable items” down the toilet, so his neighbor kicked him off the system. To afford a much-needed separate septic system for his trailer, he decided he had to sell the truck. So, I guess you could say this was one of those “hard flush” sales.

One fun point about the trip back is that I drove 13 hours in one day and picked up the truck the next morning. After driving seven hours back, I was completely beat and decided to stop for the night at a local motel. And quite ironically, across the street, there was a Captain D’s. Trying to keep my trip costs low, I figured it was a good place to grab a low-cost bite, and lo and behold… as I approached the front door… I duly note a window sticker stating that Captain D’s was founded in 1969.  Now, is that not a sign or what?
